The road west out of Rajasthan doesn’t rush toward the desert — it eases into it, past Jodhpur’s blue-walled lanes and Jaisalmer’s golden ramparts, until the Thar’s dunes begin to roll gold to the horizon on either side.
The Road to Heaven, a ruler-straight stretch of tarmac cutting directly into the white Rann near Dhordo, is unlike any drive in India: no landmarks, no horizon, just road and salt in every direction. From Kala Dungar’s black hilltop, the whole desert unfolds beneath you in silence.

Yes. Sands of Time – Rajasthan is designed as a curated self-drive journey. Participants drive themselves along a carefully designed route, experiencing the landscapes, roads and communities along the way, while travelling within a structured journey framework.

Who drives the vehicle during the journey?
You do. Sands of Time – Rajasthan is a self-drive experience, giving you the opportunity to take the wheel and experience the journey firsthand.
I have never driven off-road before. Can I still participate?
Absolutely. Previous off-road driving experience is not a prerequisite. The marshal accompanying the journey will provide guidance, instruction where required. The journey is designed to accommodate drivers with varying levels of experience. Sands of Time – Rajasthan is particularly suited to travellers who enjoy self-driving, landscapes, open roads and immersive experiences beyond conventional tourist trails. As the journey involves extended driving and varied road conditions, participants should be comfortable undertaking a road-based adventure.
What are the driving licence and minimum age requirements?
All guests who intend to drive must: Be at least 19 years of age. Hold a full, valid driving licence for at least one year. Carry the required driving documentation throughout the journey. International guests may require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their valid driving licence, subject to applicable Indian regulations.
Are children allowed on the journey?
Yes. Children above 12 years of age may participate, provided they comply with all applicable safety requirements and travel regulations throughout the journey.
Are there any fitness or medical considerations I should be aware of?
The journey involves driving for extended periods and may include varying road and terrain conditions. Participants should therefore be physically fit and medically capable of undertaking the journey and driving safely. Guests should not participate if they have a known medical or physical condition that could impair their ability to drive safely or otherwise participate in the journey. If you have any concerns regarding your fitness to participate, we recommend consulting your physician before travelling.
Can I enquire about a private departure?
Yes. You can enquire about a private departure, subject to availability and operational feasibility. Private departures can be considered for families, friends, clubs or other private groups.
Can I book the entire journey for a private group?
Yes. We can facilitate private group departures, subject to availability and the required minimum operating requirements.
What happens if the minimum number of bookings is not reached?
We make every effort to operate our journeys as scheduled. However, in exceptional circumstances, a journey may need to be cancelled if the minimum operating number is not reached. Where cancellation becomes necessary, the decision will be communicated to participants at least 8 days before the scheduled departure, wherever reasonably possible.
What is the cancellation policy?
If the journey is cancelled by Overland Signatures, the charges paid towards the journey will be refunded in accordance with the applicable booking terms.
