The Himalayan Trail

The best views aren’t handed to you—they are earned behind the wheel. The Himalayan Trail is an intense, fixed-departure overland journey built for drivers drawn to sheer drops, thin air, and forgotten mountain valleys. Across 15 days of unrelenting terrain, this expedition navigates rugged passes, cliff-carved river canyons, and stark alpine switchbacks designed to challenge both driver skill and vehicle capability.

The Story

Through Pine, Mist, and the High Passes of Northern India.

it’s Lahaul-Spiti where this journey truly reveals itself. The landscape shifts without warning — pine gives way to a stark, high-altitude desert of bare mountains, deep river gorges, and skies that feel closer than they should. The road narrows and climbs alongside the Spiti River, past centuries-old monasteries perched on impossible cliff edges, through some of the highest motorable terrain in the world.

Few drives anywhere offer this scale of contrast in a single day — and fewer still reward it with light like this.

Journey Highlights
  • Here are the spotlights on the experiences:
  • Post a letter from Hikkim — home to the world's highest post office, still in daily operation at over 14,000 feet
  • Stand in Komic — one of the highest motorable villages on Earth, where the silence itself feels like part of the landscape
  • Visit Key Monastery — perched on a hilltop above the Spiti River, its whitewashed walls visible for miles before you arrive
  • Walk through Dhankar Monastery — balanced on a cliff edge above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, centuries old and still standing
  • Explore Tabo Monastery — often called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" for murals that have survived over a thousand years
  • Cross Kunzum Pass — one of the highest motorable passes on the route, opening onto views that explain why this drive exists
Along the way

Experiences

  • Cinematic mountain driving — technically engaging roads climbing through Himachal's pine forests, culminating in a crossing of Kunzum Pass into Spiti's stark high-altitude desert.
  • Record-setting stops — Sip a hot tea at Komic, one of the highest motorable villages on Earth

Frequently
asked questions.

A few practical notes about The Himalayan Trail. If you have a question that is not answered here, send us a journey enquiry.

Do I need high-altitude driving experience?

No prior high-altitude experience is required, but comfort with mountain driving (switchbacks, narrow passes) is recommended. Our route is timed and paced specifically to keep the drive manageable — averaging 4-5 hours per day — and our lead vehicle sets the pace throughout.

Are permits required for any part of this route?

Certain stretches of the Himachal Pradesh high-altitude sections may require inner-line or local permits depending on current regulations. We handle all permit arrangements as part of your journey planning — you won't need to navigate this yourself.

What if the weather turns during the drive?

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. Our itinerary is built with buffer time and alternate routing options, and our support vehicle stays in contact throughout to adjust plans if conditions require it.

Is my own vehicle suitable for this route, or is a specific type required?

This journey requires you to bring your own vehicle. Given the terrain and distances involved, we recommend a vehicle with adequate ground clearance and reliable performance at altitude — we're happy to advise on suitability once you share your vehicle details at enquiry.

What happens if my vehicle needs assistance mid-route?

An unobtrusive support vehicle trails the convoy throughout the journey, carrying essential tools and coordinating with local service points along the route in case of any mechanical issues.

How many vehicles/travellers join each departure?

Departures are kept intentionally small to preserve the quality of the experience — exact group size is confirmed closer to each departure date based on enquiries received.
